im wondering if anyone has any good tips to create a straight edge on a new hide. I’ve seen Few YouTube videos etc but I still seem to be slipping up somewhere. Any advice would be much appreciated!
ok...the first issue is having those hides split so thin and then trying to cut them straight. Im assuming you have taurillon Laguna right? Its a very stretchy leather. 1.2 is really thin for this kind of grained leather. If you want belt straps then you need to have something that is going to stop the stretch, you will need an inner layer of something stiff like bonded leather. What you will need to do is cut that bonded leather to size(or a little wider) then glue a strip of the the Carriat leather on top and then cut to size.
Hi Peter,I recently got some hides form Carriat split down to 1.2mm. I’m trying to cut a nice straight line it so I can begin to cut belt straps out of it with a draw gauge. What I’ve done so far is lay the hide down on the desk, take a long flat bar and place it over the hide edge, clamped that down on either end and cut along the bar. I often find the leather doesn’t end up completely straight. Let alone trying to square off the far end to make straps, unless there’s no need for that
That’s correct, Laguna. Fantastic I’ll look into some bonded leather etc and see what I can do from there. Thank you Peter.

Hi James,
What do you mean by a straight edge? You mean a straight crease to the edge?
