Hi all!
I remember a documentary about a luxury house (Dior maybe), the worker explained that every pieces of leather went through a splitting machine to harmonize thickness throughout the surface. I’m a filmmaker, and the analogy i see would be « denoising », which is a post production process that smooth out an image by removing the grain, a process that kills the character of an image and its organic aspect in my opinion, i stay far away from it for personal taste.. What do you think about splitting leather for harmonization? What feel do you get? I insist on this aspect, the feel being greatly important to me.. What do you gain and what do you lose? Greetings from Paris!

Hi N.
A difference between 1.2 and 1.3 is nothing....usually in the same skin you have such slight variations.
I've never heard of splitting for hamonization....🤔
Thank you for your answer @Talitha Joy , maybe my question wasn't clear enough.. I'm not asking about paring to reduce thickness and go as an exemple from 2.8mm to 1.3mm. Let's say we have a piece that is 1.3mm in some parts and 1.2mm in other parts, paring the piece so it is 1.2mm all the way through, what does that bring in terms of feel? Do some of you always split the leather for thickness consistency throughout a piece?
I don’t think it kills any characteristics of the leather, it’s purely so that the final items won’t get too bulky and thick
