Hello guys, I’ve been wondering as per topic.
got my self ostrich from KK couple months back, it surprises me how loose and inconsistent the fiber layers can be even though they were sold at a not too cheap price tag.
Similar experience with snake skin.. I tried using my bell skiver but it’ll end up seperating the scales because it went too deep.
As for ostrich, it happened again.. it’ll go deeper under the follicle as they are slightly thicker due to the pearl (which ive already tapped them down) and which will also give pressure going into the feed of the bell skiver (i guess?)
thus, i am wondering, how do I do this?

Typically the ostrich needs to be prepared by removing as much of that fleshy stuff as possible. It can be done with a bell skiver, but I don't know how to tell you to do that. I just did it by hand and with a pair of nippers and a fabric shaver. Very tough and tedious work. Once you've done that, you'll end up with a skin that is about 0.8mm thick. It is usually, then, glued to another piece of leather to give it some structure. This is where the quills are tapped down while the glue (I would suggest PVA) is still wet. Once all dry, you can work with it more normally by skiving, lining etc.
