I’m a beginner and have collected my tools. I still need to buy materials for sharpening. What is recommended? Punches, skive, etc. thanks. Glad to be a member of the group and look forward to learning and making!
I use sandpapers, strops and Japanese whetstones to sharpen my tools. Depends on what I need to do.
Usually I strop before every cut or skive. Sandpaper (2000 or so) to resharpen a blade or a quick remedy. whetstones to make a total restore of a cutting edge, usually every 1-2 months. Some metals are softer than others so they need a bit more tlc than others.
Pretty much all we use for sharpening at the atelier is a good leather strop and some polishing compound on it.
Its mainly just awls and hand skivers we polish when needed. For a cutting knife I use disposable beads so if its getting dull i just snap it off to get the next sharp edge.
