Hello Peter,
My question is this, How long does it take to make an average bag for you? Lets say, for the purpose of discussion, a dream bag? I know that you have the pattern down, and obviously have the skills, but I would love to get some perspective of time for a bag build. Also, can you talk about how your time is spent? I.E. Day one i do this, day two i do that..
I ask as i think that i rush through my process, or at least parts of it, thinking i can't spend time here.... Perhaps if my expectations were more realistic, it might lend more perspective and allow me to apply myself to the process better.
Hi Sam,
Good question. As an example, a dream bag takes me about 6 full working days to complete. On something like a bag there is a general order in which to make it but not 100% fixed. I'll usually start the handles first because I know there is a lot of edge finishing work so I can use the dying time of the edges to work on other parts. So by the time the handles are completely done I will be a a stage with the rest of the bag where they are ready to be attached to the main panels. Basically you dont want to wait to start making the handles only when you need them. then you might be stuck not able to work further until they are done.
You know basically which parts are assembled in which order, so make sure you are thinking ahead and juggle working on the different parts - as some are drying you can stitch, then add some more edge paint and then go back to stitching.
Then once the exterior is done I'll make the entire interior and then then assemble it and make the strap last.
For something like a wallet I will cut and skins all parts first and then just assemble it all. this way you dont have to keep changing and going back to the skiver and readjusting the feet.
