I haven't used a base coat yet, but I heard that using it will speed up making the clean edge so most of the brand use it for their products. If it is true and there is no disadvantage of it, I would rather use it instead of repeating a number of grinding and edge painting.
However, Peter does not use it in his edge paint tutorial, and I feel like using a base coat is a kind of compromising the quality. If you have any exprience or information about the base coat, please share it so that I could use it in appropriate situations. :)
I feel like its a compromise in quality. What the base coat does is fills in cracks and uneven levels of the layers which will give you a quicker cleaner edge, however in time it won't wear as well, will eventually crack as its just a synthetic material.
The best is to sand the layers perfectly and have as thin a layer possible on the edges. This lasts longer and won't crack or peel.
I like to do two or three applications of edge dye before applying an edge finish such as Fenice, Giardini, or Uniters. When the edge finish does eventually begin to wear off, there will still be a related color underneath.
Hi Peter,
So you mean finishing edge without a basecoat is much durable.
Then I would rather focus on improving my edge paint skill. :)
I always appreciate for your kind answer. Thank you Peter!
