- how do you skive ostrich leather?En Help! How do I...·13 November 2020Hello guys, I’ve been wondering as per topic. got my self ostrich from KK couple months back, it surprises me how loose and inconsistent the fiber layers can be even though they were sold at a not too cheap price tag. Similar experience with snake skin.. I tried using my bell skiver but it’ll end up seperating the scales because it went too deep. As for ostrich, it happened again.. it’ll go deeper under the follicle as they are slightly thicker due to the pearl (which ive already tapped them down) and which will also give pressure going into the feed of the bell skiver (i guess?) thus, i am wondering, how do I do this?36669
- Handle typeEn Help! How do I...·9 December 2020In handbag design: Is it better to make handles that are sewn on and stand up, or is it also acceptable to make handles that attach to a square, that's attached to the bag itself, and can lay down? How do you decide which type of handle to use?42211
- How do you scratch proof your vegetan leather?En Help! How do I...·19 November 2020Many times at work, especially bigger projects such as messenger bags or briefs. No matter how careful I am, there will be accidental scratches caused by surface of table, needles, fingernails, and so on. How do I scratch proof vegetable tanned leather? if happened, how do I make it better? side note, I’ve been having issue with vegetable tanned leather going through skivers too.. they will leave super obvious skiving lines on the leather surface!42633

- Thank you Peter and Julien.En Welcome! ·22 October 2020For those who I have yet not met, my name is Eero and I run Arte Helsinki - from Helsinki, Finland. Somehow most of my clients are watch enthusiasts and watch straps are about 90% of what I do. I have been a massive fan for some time now and want to take this moment to thank you guys for this and the awesome tutorials so far. I am not new in leathercraft, but I still find the tutorials good and interesting. Some things here and there are new, some I do differently but the best part is to get a new perspective on some things. And new ideas! Tutorial wishes - gusset designs. your style of wallets and how Julien and you would make a watch strap. so Thanks and be safe everyone! -Eero34224

- Bell skiver tipsEn Help! How do I...·6 February 2021Morning all! Mr. Nitz, I just added a bell skiver to my life and was just wanting to ask a quick question. do you keep your feed roll perfectly parallel to the knife edge? I notice in your videos you only adjust your presser foot depth and angle. also would you suggest switching to a rubber style vs "stone" feed roll? Looking forward to the tutorial on them ;) thank you!! Tyler -Maison Kuro26500

- Geometry of Bell Knife Skiver Presser FeetEn Help! How do I...·26 March 2022There is not enough discussion of bell knife skiver presser feet, beyond the different lengths. I thought deburring and mirror polishing feet of any origin would be enough, but there seems to be more to consider. I have many inexpensive presser feet from China that I have polished to a mirror finish. These work fine for edge skiving but do not necessarily give the best results for panel skiving. Most of these presser feet seem to have a steep beveled curve that provides full contact with the leather just before the knife edge. From observations of online videos, it seems that people who are getting more reliable results panel skiving are using a presser foot with only a very slightly beveled curve, almost a flat curve. I hope we can use this space to share experiences with and pictures of presser feet that work well.18254
- Discussion about Patterns, Designs and CopyrightEn Help! How do I...·19 January 2021Hello Everyone! I am not sure if such discussion is permitted on this Forum or not - but seeing that we have such a high-level global audience here, I'd really love to know your thoughts! I am personally still learning the craft, however I see myself being a leather craftsman, obtaining the required certification and establishing a brand. However at the moment I do not see myself as a "designer" - perhaps it is lack of experience, but I have difficulty coming up with an entirely unique design - instead I like to look at a product, work-out a pattern for it and perhaps change a few things to my taste (ok, mostly my Wife's taste :) ) and create that. I see many craftspeople on Instagram who create gorgeous items - and some of them are basically the same as "name brand" products (most of the time even higher quality than the original!!). So what I'd like to know is as an established brand - what are the ethical/legal views on this? Is, for example, making a Birkin style bag "copycatting"? Or can it be sold under your own name? Of course, my dream - as probably most of yours too - is to create a unique design that when someone sees they immediately know who it is made by - but in the meantime a business needs to grow somehow. Looking forward to hearing from you all on the Forum! :) Thanks!25538
- Just Getting StartedEn Welcome! ·12 April 2022I am just starting my leather journey. I used to work in the custom picture framing industry years ago and enjoyed the combination of design and crafting. I have wanted to start working with my hands again and fell upon leather craft during COVID. I like the idea of being able to start in a small space as I do not have access to a workshop at the moment. After delaying for the past year, I have decided to get going. Mainly because my kids keep calling me out on my procrastination ;) My wife found @atelierpeternitz through a random Google search and then I found @Alex Dorandish and @Julien Danel through IG. Alex was kind enough to return my message and convinced me this was the right set of tutorials. I am in the process of ordering tools and getting a small work area setup. Having some accountability is good for me, so I hope to document my process and use this forum to help with that. Many thanks to all those who have offered help here to us newbies Cheers, Daniel32171
